Benefits of Mirrors

August 27th, 2011

The mirror is one of the most easily obtained, beneficial pieces of wall decor a person can invest in. There are small mirrors, tall mirrors, wide mirrors, oval mirrors, mirrors with scalloped edges and so many, many more. They are among the more practical of home accessories. In fact, some interior designers have gone as far as saying that home decor simply isn’t complete without a mirror or two. Of course, some people are wondering whether they are any actual benefits to having a mirror as part of their home accessories and decor.

Increasing Lighting

One of the biggest and absolute most important benefits of a mirror by far, is the increase in natural light that a room will receive. This is because the mirror, whether it be a large oval mirror over the fireplace, or a smaller rectangular mirror near a doorway, will reflect any light that comes into the room during the day.

This reflection creates additional light and of course, who doesn’t love extra natural light? It should be noted that this concept also applies to artificial lighting (such as lamps) during the evening. The mirror will also reflect the artificial light, helping to light the room in the darker hours of the evening or early morning.

Increase in the Room’s Size

Okay, so a mirror won’t actually increase the overall size of a room. However, a mirror can help give the appearance of a larger room. This is because the mirror reflects the room, giving the appearance of more space.

If positioned right, the homeowner could also reflect an outdoor view. This gives the illusion of an additional window, extra light and of course, gives the impression of a larger room.

Either way, the addition of a mirror into a room, no matter what the homeowner chooses to reflect, gives the illusion of more space simply due to the reflection.

Hiding Imperfections

Another huge benefit of installing a small or large mirror is that it can be used to hide imperfections in a wall. For example, an old nail hole or a scratch in the paint. Simply hang the mirror over top and voila, the flaw is gone!

Personal Use

Of course, it goes without saying that a mirror can also be used for personal needs. For example, if you’re heading out to a romantic dinner with your husband, you can use a large mirror in your living room to do a quick final check before heading out the door.

Focal Point

Last, but not least, if you’ve been struggling with creating a focal point, consider using a large mirror. A mirror will draw attention to itself for many reasons. Not only does it create the illusion of a larger room. It also, as mentioned above, reflects natural light.

The Beauty of Architecture and Design

June 18th, 2011

Blueprints are forms of history. They are pages that can go down in the annuals of history as monuments to the imagination of mankind. The architecture and design stay a part of our lifestyle and mark our civilization. They are markers of our achievements and tell stories of the buildings that stand the test of time and last throughout the ages. They can be homes, churches, office buildings or monuments that mark important people and events.

There is more to architecture than just the outside appearance of a building. Interior design architecture is a huge part of why people find some buildings so beautiful. Granted, the outside is the part that initially grabs the attention, but the interior is what makes the building memorable and functional.

Throughout history there have been incredible works of art created out of stone, wood and metal. The outer portion is detailed and intricate. Move inside and you will see that the intricacies are not limited to exterior walls.

Architecture and design must go hand in hand. From the modern buildings to the classic columns of ancient Roman Temples, the designs are built around function and beauty. A home can be more than four walls and a roof.

It can be a place that stands apart from nature and draws the eye to its beauty and form. By working together, design and architecture make four walls and a roof so much more.

It is more than function. A builder can build an edifice that is functional. It provides space, shelter and protects. But that is not always enough. Yes, one element of man’s basic needs is met but the building can be aesthetically pleasing as well as functional.

A building can be more than just four walls and a roof. It should have great architectural style. As a sentient being capable of appreciating great works, you should demand more in your surroundings. Beauty is more than skin, or wall, deep.

Once more architects begin to embrace architecture and design, you will begin to see a rebirth in the styles and different shapes of buildings. Homes will begin to lose their “cookie cutter” shape and begin to be different.

A drive down a suburban area will see homes that embrace different styles. It will be a world where differences are celebrated and people can do more than simply live in a home. They can own a unique piece of history and it can be a showcase of a living art.
